Our Own Eugene Stickland to Face Off Tonight!

Don't Miss the Calgary Face-Off Tonight!!!

7:30pm @ the Auburn Saloon - 712 1st Street South East

The Poetry Face-Off takes Flight for 2009

Starting February 6 in Regina, the poetic pugilists battle it out in CBC Radio's national competition.

CBC Radio is pleased to announce the eighth annual Poetry Face-Off! The popular Canada-wide competition brings together 45 poets in peak form to sound off in 11 cities stretching from Victoria to St. John's.

From January to March, five poets in each locale, commissioned by CBC regional producers to reflect local voices and traditions, will face-off before a live audience and deliver their words on this year's theme - 'Flight'. At each event, the spectators vote for their favourite poem, and the winner goes on to the National Poetry Face-Off, airing April 27, 28, 29, and 30, from 11 - 11.30 a.m on CBC Radio 1.

From its inception seven years ago, the Poetry Face-Off has been a cross-country event. This year, face-offs are being held in:

The North - March 20th
Vancouver - March 20th
Edmonton - March 5th
Calgary - March 12th
Regina - February 6th
Winnipeg - March 11th
Toronto - March 3rd
Fredericton - March 12th
Halifax - February 25th
Sydney - February 23rd
St. John's - March 11th

Keep watching this space for more information on the national broadcast and upcoming regional slams in your area. As National Poetry Month approaches, you'll be able to hear interviews here with the 11 regional winners where they'll talk about their winning poems.

NEWS FROM THE HOUSE

February 10, 2009

Greetings from B House Publications!

Following a somewhat lengthy break, we are back in business with a number of exciting projects. Eugene Stickland's latest play, Queen Lear, is receiving its world premiere with Calgary's Urban Curvz theatre and has been published by B House, for sale in the lobby at the theatre (follow the link below for details). For those unable to get out to see the play, the script of Queen Lear is available through B House and will be for sale at our usual locations.

B House has also been working in collaboration with the City of Calgary to bring out two books: The Hope Art Book, featuring the photography and writings on the subject of hope by youth in the Forest Lawn area of town; and Reg's Trees, a project in conjunction with the City and the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre featuring the art work of Reg Knelsen and poetry by David van Belle.

Other projects that are in the hopper include three one-act plays in one volume by Calgary playwright Neil Fleming, and Offensive Fouls, a TYA (theatre for young audiences) play by Calgary playwright and screen writer Jason Long.

B House is taking over an existing publication titled Theatre 100, which profiles 100 of the top theatre artists in Alberta's history. Originally published by the Alberta Playwrights Network, the expanded version of Theatre 100 will include "A Brief History of the APN" which is really a look at the history of playwriting in the province. It will be a valuable resource for anyone interested playwriting in Alberta, past or present.

Several poetry projects are underway, under the supervision of our Stephanie Davis, who leads a schizophrenic existence as both B House's business manager and poetry editor. Stephanie is also working with local newcomer Josh Barsky on his collection of short stories, slated for release this spring.

Looking ahead to the summer, we haven't ruled out the possibility of creating another anthology of the work coming out of the fabled Caffe Beano. We are aware that, as well as being a meeting place for writers, there are many photographers and visual artists who take their coffee there as well, so the new anthology might look quite different. It's still very much in the planning phases.

Beyond these projects, we have many ongoing conversations with Calgary artists and there are many ideas floating around out there in various stages of development. There is no doubt that we are constrained by both time and money and lack thereof, but hope that by staying active we will soon qualify for funding, which in turn will allow us to increase our activity and become even more integral to Calgary's rich cultural life.

It is with sadness and pride that we announce the departure of our original designer, Ayla Newhouse, who has relocated to Toronto to pursue advanced studies in design. We wish her every success. We are pleased to welcome Lindsay Perry and Vincent T. Joachim into the B House family as our new designers. Also, a big thank you to Andy van der Raadt for his work in design and web maintenance over the past year.

Finally, we wish to extend a long-overdue thanks to all who made it out to our gala last year. Whether a volunteer, reader, or participant in support of our project, your encouragment and enthusiasm has helped us pull through our first tough year of operation, and we couldn't have done it without you! If you would like to volunteer your time in upcoming B House events, please feel free to email Stephanie at steph@bhousepublications.com.

That's all for now. From all of us here at the House, long live the arts in Calgary!

In the Joyce Doolittle Theatre at the Pumphouse (2140 Pumphouse Ave. SW).

Did you know that the venue Urban Curvz uses was founded by Joyce Doolittle after she helped develop the historic building housing Calgary’s original water pump into an affordable theatre space?
Did you know that although Ms. Doolittle has been prolific and ubiquitous throughout the Calgary arts scene for over 50 years, she has never performed in the space named for her?

In a tribute to Ms. Doolittle, Eugene Stickland tells the story of an aging actress cast in an all female production called Queen Lear who has employed a young girl to help her memorize her lines. Musing on the different stages of life that both women exemplify, illustrating beautifully how time and experience separate them, this beautiful and touching story about the strength of the female spirit is not be missed.
This will be a once-in-a-lifetime theatrical event to see Calgary theatre icon, Joyce Doolittle perform in the theatre named for her, in a play written for her, in the 80th year of her life!
